16th CIO Workshop - "Leading IT In Uncertain Times" |
|
|
July 31 – August 1, 2003
Laguna National Golf & Country Club
Jointly organised by Accenture and the Information Technology Management Association (ITMA), the CIO Workshop is an annual gathering of 50-60 of the most senior CIOs from Singapore and the region. Considered the defacto annual forum for Chief Information Officers (CIOs) of large private and public organisations, this year’s workshop, "Leading IT In Uncertain Times", examined innovative strategies relevant to today’s turbulent times. Delegates were challenged to discuss and see how they could help their organisations navigate through uncertainty, remain competitive and innovate to recovery.Delegates kept abreast of leading IT issues with presentations and breakouts on the first day. The second day started with a networking activity (either golf or pilates), followed by more updates and discussion in the afternoon, and concluded with a networking dinner cum presentation of prizes for the networking activities and lucky draw.
Speakers at the Workshop included :
- Mr. Liak Teng Lit, CEO, Alexandra Hospital, Singapore
-
Mr. Gary Matula, Global CIO, Molex, who presented how Molex addresses business process management and IT issues in uncertain times;
-
Prof. Lai Kim Fatt, Director, Systems & Computer, Defence Science & Technology Agency, who covered how DSTA played a critical role in managing the recent SARS crisis;
-
Mr. Raoul Le Blond, Editor, CIO Asia Magazine. He threw light on recovery strategies employed by Asian companies;
-
Mrs. Rosina Howe, Director, Information Technology and Chief Innovation Officer, Land Transport Authority, who presented creative IT strategies for these challenging times;
-
Mr. Steve Ingram, MD, Group CIO, DBS Bank. He showed us how to source creatively and boldly to remain competitive;
-
Ms. Tan Puay Siew, Technical Manager, Java Smart Services Lab (JSSL), Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, who guided us through the use of web services as an innovation to provide a competitive advantage for your business; and
-
Mr. Trent Mayberry, Partner, Accenture, who discussed the significant challenges and transformation within the CIO agenda today and how to resolve them.
Highlights of the CIO Workshop included Prof. Steven Miller, Dean, IS School, Singapore Management University (SMU) who, with the help of all the delegates, put together the profile of the IT professional in the year 2005-2007; and Microsoft, Sun and an open source advocate, who had their own say in their open source panel discussion. Besides the serious stuff, the delegates let their hair down during networking sessions – playing golf or stretching out in a pilates session. The golfers got a nice tan while the pilates practitioners discovered who the elastic men and women among them truly were. The 16th CIO Workshop ended on a high note with a networking dinner. By all accounts, they had a wonderful time. In particular, delegates liked the following aspects of the 16th CIO Workshop:
- Different perspectives of other CIOs
- Rich content / Openness of the Speakers
- Networking opportunities, pilates
- Panel Discussion
- Open and Candid Discussions
