Dear fellow ITMA members,

Once again on this joyous month when we celebrate our 51st National Day and Singapore's first Olympic gold medal by swimmer Joseph Schooling, I would like to express my warmest greetings to all of you on behalf of the 37th ITMA Council. At this moment of writing my President's message, I am absolutely elated to learn that a Singaporean has just won the World Championship of Public Speaking held in Washington DC. This is another incredible achievement to cap an amazing week where our little red dot punched above its weight or shall I say, size. Let me provide you with a quick update on some matters and upcoming events.

ITMA 5-Year Masterplan Workshop

We held our first ever ITMA 5-Year Masterplan Workshop on 28 July 2016 at Accenture's Raffles City office. This was efficiently organised by Hon Secretary Mark Tham. I would like to thank all facilitators, scribes, members who spent their afternoon to vigorously deliberate, debate and describe ITMA's future. The discussions centred around the four themes of Industry, Technology & Connections, Membership and Advancement. Some of the issues discussed within each theme were as follows:

Industry - What should be ITMA's role in the industry? What is our desired state in five years? How can we better differentiate ourselves from associations such as SCS and SiTF? What are the quick wins?

Technology & Connections - How do we facilitate and improve connections to achieve better exchange of information and sharing of experience? How can we be smarter in deploying leading edge technologies?

Membership - What are the new membership segments that ITMA should be looking at? Where are these IT leaders? How do we get them to be interested in being part of ITMA? What is the value proposition? Should we increase our membership by two-fold? How do we better engage our members?

Advancement - What are the future expectations on a CIO? How can CIOs stay at the top of their profession? What should ITMA do in the area of professional development and certification of existing and aspiring CIOs? Should there be a nationally continuing education programme for CIOs that is coordinated by ITMA? How should ITMA go about implementing this in a sustainable manner? How can ITMA support CIOs to become CEOs?

We have collected many ideas and suggestions at the Masterplan Workshop and the Council will curate and review them for sharing at a future forum.

10th CIO Study Trip (22 to 29 October 2016)

Since the launch of registration for ITMA's flagship 10th CIO Study Trip on 4 August 2016, we have received an overwhelming expression of interest from many of you. As the number of interested participants far exceeded the intended group size, the planning committee is unable to accept any further registrations from many who are interested to go on the trip. We apologise and seek your understanding on this. If you are successful in securing a place on the Study Trip, you will look forward to an exciting programme themed "Technologies Changing the World" with exclusive visits to Levi's Stadium, Dropbox and Plug-and-Play. Some other site visits are still in the process of negotiation.

22nd ITBP Seminar (4 November 2016)

The annual 22nd IT Best Practices (ITBP) Seminar will be held on 4 November 2016 (Friday) at the Hotel Intercontinental. This year's ITBP theme is "The Future of Economy is Technology" and the organising chairman is Bruce Liang who is ably supported by Alvin Tan and Gan Wei Boon. You can look forward to an opening keynote address to be delivered by a government leader. Potential topics to be discussed include the Committee on the Future Economy (CFE)'s recommendations, the role of technology in Singapore's economic future, technology trends, disruption of business models and the new types of companies that will win in the future economy.

Newly Co-opted Council Member See Yoong Hwee

I would like to welcome the inclusion of See Yoong Hwee who has just been co-opted into the ITMA Council on 16 Aug 2016. Yoong Hwee heads up the IT function at YTL PowerSeraya. He has been an ITMA member since 2013 and a key member of the 10th CIO Study Trip planning committee.

Concluding Remarks

In my last President's message in May 2016, I urged members to step forward to contribute their time and expertise alongside the elected Council members. This is critical for ITMA as we simply don't have enough personal bandwidth or secretariat manpower to work on some of the fundamentals, not to mention all your ideas and suggestions. I am grateful that several of you had approached me personally and offered your help in any area of need. I conclude that volunteerism is very much alive in ITMA because of strong camaraderie among members. We are also exploring a structured approach on how ITMA, as a group, can give back to society and make a significant societal contribution.

Before I sign off, the two recent successes (1st gold medal at the Olympics Games and 1st place in the World Championship of Public Speaking) in the past week have given us Singaporeans a renewed sense of self-belief, to strive towards seemingly impossible goals. I end off with my old school motto "The Best is Yet to Be" and look forward to all of us making ITMA the best professional association ever.
