SMU Session And Panel On Prospects For Intelligent Machines And Augmented Intelligence

Date and Time:Friday 22 January 2016, 06:00pm - 07:45pm
Place:Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium Level 2, School of Accountancy/School of Law

SMU Session and Panel on Prospects for Intelligent Machines and Augmented Intelligence
The Turing Award is generally recognised as the highest distinction in computer science and the ‘Nobel Prize of Computing’. Two Turning Award winners, Professor Richard Karp (1985) and Professor Leslie Valiant (2010) will join us to present their personal views on ‘Prospects for Intelligent Machines and Augmented Intelligence’.

Intelligent machines, as well as intelligent globally networked systems, have recently recaptured the public imagination due to recent technology developments, real-world applications and a spate of recent movies. Software-driven machines and systems are not only rapidly increasing their capacity to learn, adapt and demonstrate various aspects of intelligence, they are partnering with people in new ways to advance the frontiers of integrated human-machine augmented intelligence. These developments will have a profound impact on many aspects of how we live as individuals, employees, communities and societies.

Both Professor Karp and Professor Valiant have made fundamental contributions to computing in areas that provide some of the important foundations for intelligent machines. By extension, their work has also helped to enable related abilities of intelligent machines to help people with augmenting their human intelligence.

These two Turing Award winners will share their personal observations and views on ‘Prospects for Intelligent Machines and Augmented Intelligence’. In addition, Dr Tan Geok Leng, Senior Fellow at A*STAR, and the former Chief Technology Officer of Infocomm Development Authority, will also share his view on this topic. After the presentations, the three speakers will join us for a lively panel discussion that will be moderated by Steven Miller, the SMU Vice Provost of Research, and Dean of SMU’s School of Information Systems.

Come hear these four panellists present and discuss their perspectives on the prospects for intelligent machines and augmented intelligence, and actively engage with these panellists through your questions.

This is a public outreach and education event for the general public. It is designed to be accessible for students, industry professionals, and members of community.

This event is opened to all ITMA members, and their organization.

Registration closes on Friday, 15 January 2016.
